Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Police say they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Officers then located multiple other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say early analysis indicate the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; officials are not yet informed of any injuries in association with the incident," they stated.
City officials stated they were working "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.
An important official commented the incident made him speechless and needed to be solved quickly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, mentioning the killing of nine people by a assailant focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
